Changing Windows Video Settings

SUMMARY

How can I change my Windows display settings?


SOLUTION

Sometimes, using lower resolution or color palette settings can help Laplink's Remote Control connections.

Windows Vista/7 


If your computer runs Windows 95/98/ME

  1. From the Windows Start menu, go to Settings and click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Display.

  3. Click the Settings tab.

  4. Change the Color Palette to 256.

  5. Lower the Desktop (or Screen) area to 640 by 480 pixels.

  6. Click Apply, then OK.

  7. Click Yes to keep the setting if prompted.

  8. Reboot the computer if prompted.

  9. Return to Display Properties and click the Settings tab.

  10. Click the Advanced (or Advanced Properties) button.

  11. Click the Performance tab. Move the Hardware acceleration slider to one notch above None.

  12. Click OK twice.

  13. Restart the computer when prompted.


If your computer runs Windows NT

  1. From the Windows Start menu, go to Settings and click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Display.

  3. Click the Settings tab.

  4. Change the Color Palette to 256.

  5. Lower the Desktop area to 640 by 480 pixels.

  6. Click Apply, then OK.

  7. Click Yes to keep the setting if prompted.


If your computer runs Windows 2000:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, go to Settings and click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Display.

  3. Click the Settings tab.

  4. Change the Colors to 256.

  5. Lower the Screen area to 640 by 480 pixels.

  6. Click Apply, then OK.

  7. Click Yes to keep the setting.

  8. Click the Advanced button.

  9. Click the Troubleshooting tab.

  10. Move the Hardware acceleration slider to one notch above None.

  11. Click OK twice.


If your computer runs Windows XP:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, click Control Panel.
    -For computers running in Category mode:
    Click Appearance and Themes and then click Display.
    -For computers running in Classic mode:
    Double-click Display.
     
  2. Click the Settings tab.

  3. Change the Color Quality to Medium (16 bit).

  4. Lower the Screen resolution to 800 x 600 pixels.

  5. Click Apply, then OK.

  6. Click Yes to keep the setting.

  7. Click the Advanced button.

  8. Click the Troubleshoot tab.

  9. Move the Hardware acceleration slider to one notch above None.

  10. Click OK twice.


If your computer runs Windows Vista/7:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, click Control Panel, then under Appearance and Personalization, click Adjust screen resolution.

  2. Click the drop-down list next to Resolution, move the slider to 800 x 600 pixels, and then click Apply.

  3. Click Keep to use the new resolution, or click Revert to go back to the previous resolution.
