SUMMARY

I am unable to connect to the host computer using Laplink Internet.

CAUSE

There are a number of causes for this issue.

SOLUTION

First, we want to attempt to determine which computer is having the problem. If you are getting an error message about not being able to reach the Laplink Internet server, then the problem is on the guest computer. You will want to connect via Laplink Internet from each computer and see if it shows itself as available. If it does, then that computer is probably working ok and the problem is on the other computer. If you are getting an error when actually trying to connect to the Host computer, then the problem is probably on the Host computer.

NOTE: You will want to check each computer to make sure it shows itself as available. It is possible there are problems on both computers and the following steps will need to be done on each computer.

Once you have determined which computer is having the problem, the following steps should help to resolve most Laplink Internet connection problems:

  1. In Laplink Gold 12 and newer, click on Options -> Laplink Internet Options and verify that the "Allow Laplink Internet Connections" is checked.

  2. Open the following web page:  http://whatismyipaddress.com/proxy-check
If it says you are using a proxy server, then it is most likely that it is causing the connection problem. If you can physically bypass the proxy server (connect to the network outside of it) and the connection works, then the proxy server is the issue. There are a few things that can be tried in this instance, but this will not work for all of them.
    1. Bypass the proxy server. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. In Laplink Gold, click on Options -> Laplink Internet Options.

      2. Click the Advanced button.

      3. Place a check in the Bypass Proxy server box.

      4. Click Ok twice.

      5. Close Laplink Gold and re-launch it.

      6. See if the computer shows itself as available and you are able to connect now.

    2. Specify Proxy login information. To do this follow these steps:
      1. In Laplink Gold, click on Options -> Laplink Internet Options.

      2. Click the Advanced button.

      3. Uncheck the Bypass Proxy server box.

      4. Enter your username & password for the Proxy server. Normally this is your Windows username & password.

      5. Click Ok twice.

      6. Close Laplink Gold and re-launch it.

      7. See if the computer shows itself as available and you are able to connect now.

  3. Disable any anti-virus, anti-spyware, or firewall software running on the computer. This is normally done by right-clicking on the appropriate icons in the Windows System Tray (down by the clock) and choosing Shutdown, Exit, Close, or Disable. Once they are all disabled, close and re-launch Laplink Gold and test the connection again.

  4. Clean boot the computer using the steps in the following web document, then launch Laplink Gold, and test the connection again: Technical Document 252: How to Prevent Background Programs from Starting when Booting Your Computer.

  5. Reregister the computer with Laplink Internet to verify it is using the correct account information. To do so, follow the directions in Technical Document 1097: How to change Laplink Internet registration information.

  6. Completely uninstall and reinstall Laplink Gold from the computer using the directions in the following web document: Technical Document 103: How to Remove Laplink, Inc. Products from the Hard Drive and the Windows Registry.

  7. If the above steps still have not resolved the connection problem, Contact Technical Support for additional assistance.
